Ponchos don’t kill people; people who knit ponchos kill people.

This Hobby Gets More Obsessive All The Time

Today is a local fiber holiday. The Yarn Harlot is coming to the south east, finally. Hundreds of people are skipping work-or half a day of it anyway. My group is meeting at a tavern near there at 11:00 a.m. for lunch and an afternoon of knitting that will last late into the night. They are expecting over 700 knitters. I had no idea we even had that many knitters in the region. Should be fun! So if nobody from the south is around today, you know where we all are. I put off seaming ribby to knit a couple hats to give to ESC later today:

hathat, top
Top down hat.
tychustychus, close up
A slightly pointy Tychus knit from Muench Bergamo.

…the Eye‘ds of March Candy

I’m sure even Marcia cringed on that one, because it was SO not good!

Anyhow, a few weeks ago someone was whining about a new Eye Candy button, so I decided to make one…or four.

button button button button

Go ahead, take one…or all!

So one day last week I come home to this on my doorstep:

WTF? I was all geared up to go all Brutus on Junior thinking he’d just up left the damned trash there and couldn’t be bothered to walk it the extra 50 feet to the trash cans. But then I realized that to actually remove the trash from the house would require forethought and initiative. Riiiiiight!

Besides the bag was REALLY light, like someone had stuffed it with cotton-candy. Wanna see what’s inside?

That, my friends, is 100% genuine freshly shaved llama ass! (ok ok, OKAY! It’s a big deal for THIS city girl) Apparently, the couple who bought the home next door has a sister who has llamas, and this was a little gifty they left for me. Guess they talked with the DH and he told them what a fiber enthusiast I am. When I realized what this was I was so touched, I was giddy, giggling like a school girl as I plunged my fingers into the sproingy goodness and fondled to my heart’s content. That is until I realized, a) La don’t do spin (because La totally SUCKS at spin), b) La don’t know the first thing about prepping raw fiber even if she DID do spin, and c) La now has no idea what to do with all this gorgeous stuff.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

SAFF 06, Part 2, aka Debtor’s Prison

So moving right along: Saturday. Now SAFF is short for Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair. Meaning it revolves around animal fibers and fiber producing animals. You will not find a lot of commercial yarns at this one, which I love. You can buy cascade anywhere-you come to this fair to support small farmers, spinners, mills, dyers and other fiber artisans. Before SAFF (last year was my first year attending), my experience with fiber festivals was Stitches West, TKGA Marketplace and Fabulous Fiber Fest. TOTALLY different experiences from this show. There is a lot of raw fiber, top and roving. The Southeastern Felters’ Guild (can’t find a link) has a large presence, there is a heavy lean toward spinning and weaving, not just knitting. And I don’t believe I laid eyes on a single ball of acrylic novelty yarn. You can also visit and pat alpacas, llamas, angora rabbits, sheep and goats and talk with the people who raise them. You can buy them, too. And believe me, I almost did. (skimmers, pay no attention to the content behind the jump … )
